"Echoes of the Coast" ~ Stories of Place, Presence, and the Female Gaze

Ocean Eversley is a Falmouth-based painter, poet, photographer, and retired clinical social worker. Deeply committed to her community, she serves as an appointed member of the Falmouth Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Advisory Committee and as the DEI outreach coordinator for the Falmouth Cultural Council. For decades, she owned and operated prominent businesses on Martha’s Vineyard, including the Summer Breeze Gift Store on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs, the Rising Sun Horse Ranch, Diana’s at the Winifred Restaurant, and Personal Best-One on One Training. Her artwork invites viewers into a dreamlike realm where portraiture and landscape intertwine, creating a sanctuary to explore human complexity. Deeply rooted in her ten years of living in Falmouth and the thirty-two years she has spent on Martha’s Vineyard—an island she has returned to each season since 1965—her paintings reflect a constant dialogue between the ocean, shifting light, and identity. As an African American and Native American artist, her work is profoundly influenced by the rich diversity and creative brilliance of BIPOC communities. She paints from both emotional and literal perspectives, capturing not only the physical beauty of the shoreline but also the profound feelings of freedom, renewal, and belonging that water inspires.
